St. Pete Beach offers miles of white, sandy beaches on the Gulf of Mexico and is situated along the Gulf Beaches of Tampa Bay, Florida. Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, located in St. Petersburg, is just a short drive from our beach resorts or hotels. St. Pete Beach is located on the most southern island along the Gulf Beaches on what used to be called Long Key. Originally called St. Petersburg Beach and created in 1957, St. Pete Beach has a rich history. Pass-A-Grill, the southern tip of St. Pete Beach was named by Cuban fisherman who camped in the area. They would smoke there fish in their camp sites before leaving. The fisherman were called "Grillers" because you could see their fires as you traveled by water - Pass-A-Grille. People started to settle in this area of St. Pete Beach in 1902. St. Pete Beach also claims the famous Don CeSar Resort, a historic landmark. It was built in 1928, for 1.5 million dollars. It has 275 rooms and is ten stories tall. Due to the financial times, the government purchased the St. Pete Beach hotel in the early 1940's. It was turned it into a hospital where it was stripped and painted green. In 1969, the government abandoned the facility (it needed 3 million dollars in renovations), and the County began the process to tear it down. In 1972, a citizens group, purchased the famous St. Pete Beach hotel, , renovated it and the Don CeSar was reopened in 1973.
